Frequently asked questions

  • Hives are made from a composite material. We have chosen the composite material because it is durable and does not require painting. It is also rot and termite resistant. This means you can keep them in your yard without fear of attracting timber pests to your house.

  • Our hives also include polycarbonate dividing plates. These plates make propagating (splitting) or harvesting clean and safe for the bees.

They help the hive come apart at the joins without causing damage to the internal contents. This limits pest attraction and also makes it safer and is more gentle on the bees.

We recently collaborated with Western Sydney Uni to trial different methods of splitting hives. Splitting using our hive design resulted in far more successful healthy colonies for the bees than using the eduction method (the supposed more gentle method).

Why was this? When splitting you open the hive and intervene far less. Opening or viewing inside the hive is actually detrimental and can cause stress on the bees. By opening the hive cleanly using dividing plates once when splitting we were able to have the hive open for far less time than if we were checking eductions weekly or fortnightly.

  • Hives need to be protected from hot midday and afternoon sun. It is best to position them facing a north east direction with protection and shade from 11am. It is also important to keep hives away from reflected heat from hot surfaces like colourbond fences or concrete.

We do not offer refunds on our hives, however we back them with a 6 month guarantee. This means we will supply a new hive if your hive fails as a result of loosing the queen in the first 6 months. We cannot cover hives that have been exposed to extreme heat over 40* or hives that have been opened, split, harvested or modified.

  • Stingless bees require very minimal intervention. Clearing away spider webs and ensuring a clear flight path are the key maintenance points. From there, you can add extra tasks such as weighing the hive on scales, yearly splitting or harvesting that can be done yourself with a little training. If you do not wish to harvest or split you can get us to do it for you. Hives do not have to be split. They self regulate their numbers and never swarm and leave the hive.

  • Yes. It takes time for the bees to fill the hive completely and store excess honey. We will give you the information needed to harvest your own honey. We also offer our services to do this for you if you require a demonstration.

  • Native bees contribute to biodiversity, sustainability, and play a significant role in pollinating plants, leading to the production of fruits, nuts, and seeds.

  • Absolutely. They are stingless and will live in harmony in your garden among your children and pets.

  • Hives will be posted out during November and Early December 2025
